The Year I Read the Bible with Laurie Larsen
Episode 20: If it Worked For Him, It'll Work For Us
What worked? And who did it work for?
This episode is all about when Jesus, after being baptized by John the Baptist, went into the wilderness for forty days and forty nights, and in his hungry and thirsty state, was tempted by the Devil himself. But Jesus stood strong by fighting Satan with God's word, the same words we read in our Bible.
Satan tempts Jesus's followers to this day, and we can fight him the same way. But it takes some preparation now, while life is peaceful so we can use our weapons when the need arises. Build an arsenal of Bible verses, memorize and use them against the enemy when he strikes.
My guest today is the engaging and faithful Lisa Pritchard. Lisa said, "Psalms are balms for the soul." She also shared her message with such enthusiasm that I said, "I feel like a Hallelujah! is in order!" You won't want to miss this uplifting episode.

Also, Lisa shared her arsenal of Bible verses that she uses to combat the devil. Here they are:
Hi, I'm your host Lori Larson, and this is the year I read the Bible. Welcome a Lifelong Christian. I thought I was familiar with the Bible, but in 2023 I accepted the challenge of reading the whole thing, cover to cover. Whenever I encountered something I didn't understand or wanted to learn more. I jotted it down, but I kept reading to stay on schedule. Then I reached the end Imagine Confetti rating down on me, and a huge sigh of relief. I had 40 topics to research in 2024. I started diving into all those topics. I did research, I wrote blogs and I shared them with whoever might wanna learn too. And in 2025, the project continues. I published a book containing all my essays, and now a podcast. Is there something you can learn from that dusty book that sits on all of our shelves? Yes. Yes, there is. Let's dive into The year I read the Bible. Hello listeners, this is Lori Larson. I hope you're having a great day. Sometimes when I encounter something in the Bible that it just comes down to common sense. It's almost like a instructor's manual for how to live our lives the way that God wants us to live. So this particular essay today is called. If it worked for him, it'll work for us, and let's get right into it. After Jesus was baptized by John, the gospel of Matthew describes a wondrous scene, chapter three, verse 16 in the new international version. At that moment, heaven was opened and he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove and a lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, this is my son whom I love with him. I am well pleased. Wow. If anyone had any doubt that this was no ordinary man, that he was special and divine, that would've cleared things up in a hurry. It should come as no surprise. Then what happened next? Matthew, chapter four, one and two. Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting, 40 days and 40 nights, he was hungry. As we often see, the Bible gives us the ultimate in under statements. Draw on your imagination for a moment and think about that scene. Jesus, all alone in the Judean wilderness desert. Lots of sand, mountainous, very little vegetation, wild animals roamed freely. Not only was he hungry, which he certainly was because he intentionally fasted, but he was thirsty and unprotected from the elements. He was cold, he was hot, he was uncomfortable. What did he do during this time? He prayed and he focused on God. He had just been baptized. By the forerunner that God had planned for him and now he was in communication with his father. I believe this is when Jesus and God laid out all the detailed plans for Jesus's ministry, what he would say, where he would travel, who he would bring along with him, what he would accomplish, and ultimately how his life would end. Jesus knew all that from the beginning. And this 40 day isolation seems like a good time to shore up the master plan. What would you feel like after 40 days and nights of surviving in the wilderness with no food or drink and no protection from the elements? Honestly, I wouldn't survive that long, much less engage my brain in praying and plan making, but it was at this moment that the devil made his appearance. Matthew four, verse three. The tempter came to him and said, if you are the son of God, tell these stones to become bred. The devil knew that the son of God, beginning his official ministry on Earth was not a good thing for him. He didn't need the sign of the dove and God's booming voice from the skies after Jesus's baptism. To convince him that this was no ordinary man. He was well aware, so he waited till Jesus was at his most vulnerable to attack him and try to change the course of history to Satan's words. In verse three, Jesus responded in verse four, man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Jesus was responding with ancient words, meaningful words, the same words that his ancestor Moses told the people of Israel after he delivered to them God's 10 commandments. Moses was admonishing them to be careful to follow every command so that they may live fully and possess the land. The Lord promised their ancestors. He reminded them that God led them out of the wilderness and fed them manna, which was bred in the desert, Jewish people of Jesus' Day would be familiar with that verse. And Jesus used it to dispute what Satan was trying to tempt him to do. Oh, you're hungry, Jesus. If you are the son of God, prove it. By turning these stones to bread, you'll convince me of who you are. And you'll also end this crazy hunger strike you're on. I can just hear the taunting voice. The devil used to the weak and hungry Jesus trying to get him to cave, but Jesus not only didn't give into temptation, but he also taught the devil a thing or two. By quoting scripture. The devil didn't give up. He tested Jesus Two more times. Even going so far as quoting scripture back to Jesus, twisting it around to meet Satan's own agenda, but Jesus didn't fall for it. He stood strong in the face of temptation and responded with scripture verses at the ready the last time, saying in verse 10, away from me, Satan, for it is written. Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only. That was a verse taken from Deuteronomy six 13. Then what a beautiful ending in verse 11. then the devil left him and angels came and attended him. I can just imagine the angels that God sent to Jesus' side. What did they do to attend him? I imagine they spoke to him, praising him for his success against the evil one, gave him food and drink, treated whatever bodily injuries he'd incurred during his time in the wilderness, helped him recover so he could go on and continue his important ministry. Satan is alive and well in our modern world. He may not take the same physical form. That he took with Jesus in the wilderness. You may not be able to see him, but if you know what you're looking for, you'll know when he's attacking you because that's what Satan does to Christians. He goes on the attack. Jesus himself says in John 10, verse 10, the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life and have it to the full. In life, we experience all kinds of trials. Sadness, despair, fear, temptation. Be assured that these types of emotions are not from God. They originate from God's opponent, the devil. If we are confronted with these feelings because of the circumstances in our lives, let's try handling them the same way Jesus did. Let's confront Satan with scripture, but how we need to be prepared. Put some time into identifying a litany of scriptures to memorize. Place them in your arsenal of weapons for fighting evil. Don't wait till Satan attacks your wellbeing. Do it now during a time of peace. So that you can pull them up in your mind and say them out loud When Satan intervenes, where do we start? The Bible provides an almost endless supply of strength and hope that we can use to turn the tide when negativity hits our lives. But I suggest that we start in three places. Psalms the epistles of the Apostle Paul and the Gospels. The Psalms were written as poems or songs, or even ancient journal entries by King David and many others. Some were written to bemoan terrible things happening in their lives, but they were also written to praise God when things were good. Flipped to the Book of Psalms and start reading until you find a verse or two that will help you in your warfare against evil, for example. Psalm 46 verse one. God is our refuge and strength and ever present help in trouble, short and sweet, and easy to memorize. The reason I suggest arming yourself with verses from Paul's letters is because of to whom and why he wrote them. Paul's mission on Earth was to spread the gospel, the story of Jesus. To Gentiles or non-Jews throughout the world. He traveled far and wide and spread the word, and as a result, early Christian churches were formed. He didn't just urge these churches to open and then abandoned them in their new faith. He stayed in touch through letters. He wrote to them with encouragement and advice and continued knowledge about the Jesus that they now serve. Those very ancient letters make up parts of our New Testament. Paul's advice to his fledgling churches can also be advice to us in modern times. They are also good verses to memorize to get us through dark times in life such as one Corinthians four verse five in the new international version. Judge, nothing before the appointed time. Wait until the Lord comes, he will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time, each will receive their praise from God. What better place to have positive messages to throw in Satan's face than the actual words of Jesus himself? We'd find those words in the gospels. Jesus was constantly building up his disciples because he knew they needed to learn all they could about his message to spread the word when Jesus's physical life ended. Spend some time in the gospels to come up with something that resonates with you to use as a weapon when spiritual warfare attacks your life. For example, John 16, verse 33. I have told you these things so that in me, you may have peace in this world, you will have trouble. But take heart, I have overcome the world. Hard times are going to hit us. It's a reality of life, but arming yourself with words from scripture to help you get through the hard times is a positive and powerful method of fighting evil. After all, Jesus himself did it. So we know it works. Let's say a prayer. Dear God, we want to count on you to help us when the troubles of life hit us. We know you love us and want us to survive the hard times and come out the other side to love and good and positivity. Give us the knowledge and wisdom to select verses from your word to memorize and recite in the face of evil. We know that this method worked for Jesus and therefore we trust that it will work for us. Amen. And now listeners, stay tuned. I have an interview, a chat with a good friend coming up who is just one of the most positive. And inspirational and faithful people you'll ever wanna hear from. Stay tuned.
Laurie:And we are back Thank you for staying with us today I am so excited to introduce you to a brand new guest who is new to the podcast and I'm gonna ask her to introduce herself and also let you know where she and I became acquainted with each other But her name is Lisa Pritchard Welcome Lisa
Lisa:Thank you so much for having me, here tonight. I really appreciate the time and, look forward to our discussions.
Laurie:So do I I think it's gonna be a great one but why don't you start by telling us a little about yourself and your writing So that's a little precursor to the listeners She is a writer Anything you wanna share about your current activities and then also share how you and I became acquainted with each other
Lisa:Okay, we moved here to the coast in December of 2023, so a little less than two years ago. And it was at that time that I made a commitment to God to write a book for him. And he began to open doors immediately, through new neighbors, through groups of people that I never knew.
Laurie:Wow
Lisa:And so, yeah, I was so excited. I felt very confirmed in all of this. I joined Word Weavers, which is a critiquing writing group. And, then. President of that group encouraged me to go to some Christian writers conferences, which I was totally opposed to because I didn't think I had the time and I didn't realize how much I needed them. Well, I went and my goodness, I made so many connections, met so many nice people. Everyone is so encouraging. And it was just, both of those experiences were amazing and. Yeah, and so when I came back, it wasn't long after that, this story just fell into my heart, and I know that God put it there because it was absolutely not in the genre that I intended to write in. And. It's a children's picture book. I was going to write a devotional book and a book on hope and all these other things. Well, so I've got this children's picture book and it's called Dirt Dog and it's going to be released in the spring of 2026. And it's, yeah. Thank you. I'm so excited about it. It's meant to teach children that we should look at the inside in the heart of people rather than what people look like. And so, you know, there's a lesson in it. Also the friend that convinced me to go to the Christian Writers Conferences, her name is Jennifer, and she and I are writing a six book series together.
Laurie:Wow
Lisa:just. And is called, gets to the Rescue a Cousin Crew series. Well, this is, where we use age appropriate vocabulary. We did some research and looked up the vocabulary for different grade levels. And so we are using that in context through the story. And then in. Including a glossary in the back to try to combat these plummeting literacy rates that have just been a trend over the last several years. And, it's really a little bit scary, to be honest with you. And while we're doing that, we're also including family values and Christian values because I believe that's really important to the future of our country.
Laurie:Oh that's fantastic What a great project What a
Lisa:Yeah.
Laurie:to use your talents and your skills I can't wait
Lisa:Well, we're very excited about it.
Laurie:wait till those books come out
Lisa:Well, thank you.
Laurie:that you've also been working on a Psalms Bible study Do you wanna tell us about that
Lisa:Oh, of course. Well, I just launched this Bible study and what happened? I was going through Psalms myself because. I love Psalms number one, and I've probably read it 18 or 20 times depending on which Bible you're looking in. But, I decided because I was getting such spiritual goodness and encouragement and feeling so full of hope that I wanted other people to feel this too. So instead of just finishing the whole thing on my own, I decided to start a study. It's called After God's Own Heart, and we are focusing only on the Psalms that David wrote because we want to be people after God's own heart.
Laurie:Yes
Lisa:And so it is on my website, and that is www.prayingprodigals.com. And for anyone that subscribes to my website, this, Bible study is free to them. If they subscribe, they'll get an access code to be able to do the study. I'm really excited about that and it's not too late to join up.
Laurie:And I joined up and I started last week I know they come out do they come out every Monday
Lisa:It is every Monday and I think I will probably let one or two stay on at a time and then take one off. Like when I put three on, I'll take one off so that people, if they do get behind, they'll have a chance to at least go in and print it off and have it, so then you, when they want to.
Laurie:Well I really enjoyed the first one so I need to get in there tomorrow and do week two
Lisa:Well, thank you. I do wanna add one more thing if I can. It's because I want people to know what's going on here. Seven female authors from the coast are working on a beach anthology, and the name of the book is Carolina Tides. So there'll be seven coastal type stories. But the reason that I really wanted to bring it up is because the proceeds are gonna go to a local women's shelter. So anyone that purchases the book will be, helping with that. I think it's going to be in the spring of next year, so that when people start coming to the beach, hopefully we'll have it in stores ready for them to pick it up and take it out onto the beach with them.
Laurie:timing That's perfect And the next question is how you and I became acquainted with each other
Lisa:Yes. Recently I joined the American Christian Fiction Writers Group, and it was the South Carolina Low Country Chapter, which you are the president of. And you recognized that we didn't live that far away from each other. And we decided to have lunch at Boardwalk Billies at North Myrtle Beach, and we started talking right away and became very fast friends because we have so many common interests. And I believe that, we have the same motive for our writing, and that is to advance the kingdom of God. And as Charlie Kirk would say, make heaven crowded.
Laurie:I love it I love it Yes we've had such a good time together and I look forward
Lisa:Yes.
Laurie:get togethers as well
Lisa:Oh yes, me too. I can't wait.
Laurie:All right Well we are here to talk about if it worked for him it'll work for us And I just finished reading the essay to the listeners and I have some questions for you first of all That verse Matthew three 16 and 17 Imagine yourself on the banks of the Jordan watching Jesus baptized and you see and hear that amazing scene of The voice from heaven coming down and saying this is my son with whom I am well pleased How do you think you would react to that if you were lucky enough to have been on that shore
Lisa:I think I would fall on my face. I don't think I would be able to stand, but you know, my mind is too human to imagine how incredible that moment actually was. I think about heaven opening up and seeing this dove coming down as the spirit of God and landing on Jesus and hearing this big booming voice and it's God expressing his. Pride and love and care for his son. I can hardly imagine it, but recently I actually read, in Matthew that chapter and I began to just quiver and tears rolled up in my eyes because I was trying to. Envision it. And I lived on the Intercoastal, and I was looking out over the water just as the sun was coming up over the horizon. And I tried to picture Jesus in the water and this voice. And I'll tell you, I was just, in awe and it was a beautiful, beautiful moment. That's all I know how to describe it. I, I don't know any other way. It was amazing.
Laurie:It's a high point for me of the entire New Testament I just love that several verses and just the imagery that it gives me
Lisa:Yes,
Laurie:yes it's very special
Lisa:it's moving. It's very moving.
Laurie:Yes Well the majority of this essay talks about when Jesus was in the extreme conditions in the desert For 40 days and 40 nights my heart just goes out to him And the devil approached him when he was deprived of thirsting weakness loneliness And yet Jesus kept his wits about him and he stayed strong despite the devil's temptations what do you think about this time what are your thoughts
Lisa:Well, it helps me to understand that his sacrifice did not begin on the cross it began in that desert for nearly six weeks. 40 days is only two days shy of six weeks of suffering, and I'm very thankful that Jesus held on and did not succumb to Satan's attacks. Jesus is and was the only acceptable sacrifice. So without him, there would be no eternity for us. Another thought that I had is that I wanna do a better job of staying strong. Under spiritual attack, and I know all of us are under spiritual attack at some point, and sometimes unwittingly, you know, sometimes I don't even recognize that that's what's happening. But Satan knows, he knows our weaknesses and he, knows how to make us feel like we're unprotected and weak. He uses that against us. But it's important to point out that, and I can't stress this enough that Satan used scripture to try to manipulate Jesus, who is the word? And we know Jesus is the word from John one, one and one 14. But still, Satan thought he could manipulate the word with Jesus. So we shouldn't for one moment, think. He won't try it on us. And so we have to be very careful and make sure we're in the word, that we're memorizing the word, that we're studying the word, so that we can use it and not be tempted into things that we should never walk into.
Laurie:I feel like a hallelujah is in order here
Lisa:Yes. Hallelujah, girl. Exactly. You know, until, recently I think church decline was, imminent. And people didn't wanna hear the word, they didn't want to read it, they didn't want to interact with people that did. But because of the tragic events that had been, going on recently, I believe that we're having a revival and. I want us to all realize that we need to be in the word and that we can fight Satan the same way Jesus did. In Matthew four, four, it says, it is written, man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word. Comes from the mouth of God. And so Jesus showed us that we can fight with the scripture. He also showed us that we should never let anything, whether it's a kingdom or possessions or people or anything, take the number one spot. You know, that is God's spot, and we can't let anything else take its place.
Laurie:Yeah he set an example for us Well he continued to set an example for us throughout the entire gospels But this story of right after John baptized him and the dove came down and God recognized him and praised him He went straight into The desert And when he was in a weakened state the devil thought oh this is my chance This is my chance to get him What if I stop him before he even starts
Lisa:Yes.
Laurie:Jesus demonstrated for us in no uncertain terms how to fight the devil He you
Lisa:Yes, he did.
Laurie:with the scripture
Lisa:That's right.
Laurie:so
Lisa:Yes. We need to commit our lives to being bold and brave and courageous for Jesus.
Laurie:That's right Preach it so after the devil tries and tries and tries again and Jesus stands up to him Satan leaves and The angels come down and administer to Jesus and I just love that idea of angels coming to Jesus side after he defeated Satan's attempts to pull him away from God's will do you think in your fiction writer's mind what do you think that intervention looked like
Lisa:Well, I've been thinking about that and it doesn't tell us, the Bible doesn't really elaborate on how many angels. It might have been one, it could have been two archangels, Michael and Gabriel. It could have been a legion of angels. We don't really know. But I started to think about Elijah, if you can remember that story, and how he had practically asked for death because he was afraid of Jezebel. But God sent him an angel after Elijah arrested to bring him some bread and water to sustain him for the 40 days and nights so that he could go to Mount Hora. But back to Jesus, I imagine angels coming, they cleaned his body maybe of this dry caked on sand that was on his blistering dry skin and lips and maybe applied some bal or some oils to him. And you know, I kind of think maybe they could have brought some fresh bread and some cool water and maybe. Took him to a cool, shady place to rest with a nice mat and a fresh, clean change of clothes. But more importantly, I think that they would need to minister to his emotional needs because I think that while the physical needs would obviously be important, I can't imagine the strain that it must have caused and the stress that it must have caused on his emotions and the, poison that, Satan tried to, penetrate with. I believe that the angels may have come and maybe they read some scripture to him to fight off. This massive poison. Or maybe there was an angelic choir or maybe they brought a message from God saying, Jesus, you did it. You're great. You are the sacrificial lamb now. I don't know, but I know that he was pleased. God was pleased with his son, and we also know that it was effective, whatever they did, because Jesus started his ministry right after that of preaching, choosing his disciples and healing others.
Laurie:Yes And I mean come on did Satan really think he was gonna derail Jesus before he even got started I mean come on
Lisa:I mean.
Laurie:That's right in the essay we get onto the thought that we need as humans on this very imperfect earth an arsenal Of Bible verses
Lisa:Yes, ma.
Laurie:we have memorized so that when Satan attacks when there is that spiritual warfare that we know is going to eventually hit us we can turn to we're already prepared for when Satan intervenes are your favorite go-to verses or sections of the Bible that have helped you through hard times
Lisa:Well, I've mentioned Psalms, but let me say this, I believe that Psalms are bombs for the soul.
Laurie:Oh love
Lisa:So
Laurie:I
Lisa:Psalms are bombs for the soul. And I've already mentioned that I, had returned to that and, have made up the study and everything that's available. But, I love how we're reminded in Psalms that God is our refuge. He is the lifter of our heads. He is the strong tower, and that we are wonderfully and fearfully made and that we can just be still. He doesn't need us to do anything. He gives us opportunities to, but he doesn't need us to do anything just to be still. And also we're reminded that when the desires of our heart line up with his, he will grant them to us. There's so many promises and so many things in there. I couldn't list them all. But there's a few other verses that are not in Psalms that, are really good. And that's James four seven. When you're tempted, submit them to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you. I love it and I will say it. 10 times if I have to right in a row just to make that happen. Like I will just keep saying it over and over, over again. And then my life verse is Isaiah 41 13, and that is one that when I need. Extra encouragement or just to remember that God is with me if I'm afraid of something, it goes like this for the Lord, your God takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear, I will help you. And that's such an easy verse to remember. And I have said that over and over and over again. And the middle of the night when those concerns start to creep into your mind and try to stress you. So I love that one. Exodus 14. 14 is another one that's really good. And it says the Lord, your God will fight for you. You need only to be still.
Laurie:Oh these are good I'm writing them down
Lisa:a couple more. First Thessalonians five reminds us that we are to rejoice. We are to pray, and we are to give thanks in all circumstances. It doesn't mean only when things are going our way, like when things are not going our way is when we really need to focus on this. And then John 17, 17 sanctify them with the truth. Your word is truth, and that reminds us that we need to stay in the word of God and that is what makes us strong. That is what sanctifies us. That's what keeps us on the right path. What.
Laurie:Well you have given us a great arsenal of powerful Bible verses In fact I'm going to link those verses into our show notes so that people can click right on them and read the words and put them in their own arsenal and start memorizing
Lisa:Yes. And I'd like to point out one more thing, I did memorize, Psalm 101 through five when I was five years old, but I'm not gonna recite that for you, for lack of time. But here's what the point of telling you that is, if we can teach children. When they are young, at five years old to memorize scripture. I mean, it's a little over five decades later. I have not forgotten those verses and the King James version. Mind you,
Laurie:impressive
Lisa:fight those verses and we need to teach our children when they're young, memorize the scripture.
Laurie:Yeah It's so true Out of king James That's very impressive
Lisa:Yeah, well that's what they taught back then. You know, back in the old days.
Laurie:Oh Lisa you have just been such a pleasure today Is there anything else that you wanted to add about this whole idea of if it worked for him it'll work for us
Lisa:There is one more thing that I would like to say that we can do to fight off temptation or discouragement, and that is that we can use praise and worship music and sing with gratitude in our hearts to the Lord. It doesn't matter what's going on around us. I can turn on my playlist and start singing and it's like the Holy Spirit is right there with me and he's just filling me up.
Laurie:Yes and I agree that even if you're down even if you're discouraged or despaired just turning on your favorite worship music and singing along and lifting up your heart to God it will make a difference in your mood and in your manner and in your focus Instead of focusing on what is bad or wrong you will be focusing on Jesus and what is right and strong
Lisa:That's right. That's exactly right. One of my favorites is Gratitude by Brandon Lake. I love it. And sometimes I'll start crying, but they're just, they're tears of joy. They're tears of gratitude and love and acknowledging the Lord.
Laurie:That's awesome Well thank you for being here today and thank you for providing such an uplifting message it's just been a pleasure and I'd like to let the listeners know that Lisa is going to join us next week as well so if you liked what you
Lisa:I can't wait.
Laurie:stay tuned next Tuesday and she will be back
Lisa:Thank you for having me, Laura. I really appreciate it.
